Scratches on Your Glasses? Don’t Waste Money Before Trying This
Small scratches on eyeglasses can be incredibly annoying. They catch the light, blur your vision, and can make an otherwise perfectly good pair of glasses look worn out.
You may have seen viral hacks claiming that toothpaste, baking soda, or other household products can make scratches “disappear instantly.”
Unfortunately, there’s a catch.
These products generally cannot remove a true scratch from an optical lens. In some cases, rubbing abrasive substances onto coated lenses can actually make the surface worse by damaging the anti-reflective or protective coating.
So what should you do?
Start with the simplest solution:
1. Rinse the lenses with lukewarm water.
This helps remove dust and particles that could cause additional scratching.
2. Use a small amount of lens-safe cleaning solution.
Apply it gently rather than using household cleaners.
3. Dry with a clean microfiber cloth.
Avoid tissues, paper towels, clothing, or rough fabrics.
What if the scratch is still there?
If the scratch is affecting your vision, the safest option is to have the lenses inspected by an optician. Depending on the lens material and coating, replacing the lenses may be the only reliable solution.
And remember:
Don’t try to “polish away” scratches from prescription lenses. You could damage the optical surface or coating and potentially make your vision worse.
That viral trick might sound like an easy money-saving solution—but when it comes to your eyesight, a quick hack isn’t always worth the risk.
