After allowing the woman to start selling cooked food in front of my shop

😳 I GAVE HER SPACE TO SELL FOOD IN FRONT OF MY SHOP, BUT HER ATTITUDE COMPLETELY CHANGED!

Sometimes, the people we help are the ones who teach us the importance of boundaries. 💔🤔

When I allowed a woman to start selling cooked food in front of my shop, I genuinely believed I was doing something good. She needed a place to sell her food, and I had a little space available. After considering her request, I agreed to help her, provided she followed one simple rule: she had to finish selling in the morning and pack up before I opened my shop.

At first, everything went smoothly. She respected our agreement, sold her food in the morning, and cleared the space on time. I felt happy that I had given her an opportunity to earn a living, and I never regretted my decision.

Little did I know that things would eventually take an unexpected turn. 😔

🍲 When Kindness Became a Business Relationship

In those early days, the woman was friendly and appreciative. Sometimes, before closing for the day, she would offer me a plate of food without asking for payment. I always thanked her for her kindness.

There were also occasions when I bought food from her. Sometimes, she would insist that I shouldn’t pay for everything because we were doing business together.

I understood that she was trying to be friendly, and I appreciated the gesture. I never demanded free food from her or expected her to feed me simply because I had allowed her to use the space.

As time passed, however, my shop gradually became a storage area for her business equipment. She began keeping her bench, plates, buckets, and other cooking supplies inside my shop.

Since I had enough space and she wasn’t causing any immediate problems, I didn’t complain. I believed that helping one another was part of maintaining a peaceful relationship with people in the same business environment.

Unfortunately, I soon discovered that sometimes, when you give someone an inch, they may begin to expect a mile. 😟

⏰ The Day She Broke Our Agreement

One particular morning, the woman started selling her food as usual. When I began preparing to open my shop, she was still serving customers.

At first, I assumed she would finish shortly. I continued with my preparations, expecting her to pack up as we had agreed.

But the hours passed, and she remained in front of my shop.

More than four hours after the agreed closing time, she was finally preparing to leave.

I approached her calmly because I didn’t want to create unnecessary tension.

“Madam, this one you closed late today o. We agreed that you would sell only in the morning and finish before I opened my shop. Today, you have stayed for more than four extra hours. I hope this will not become a regular thing.”

I expected her to explain what had happened or perhaps apologize for staying longer than agreed.

Instead, her response caught me completely off guard.

“Your body dey pepper you o! Are you not also a business owner? Na every day business dey go well? I did not finish selling my food on time. Am I supposed to throw everything away because of the time we agreed on?”

I was stunned. 😳

I hadn’t shouted at her, insulted her, or told her to stop selling food altogether. I had simply reminded her of the agreement she had made with me before starting her business.

She continued explaining that customers sometimes arrived late and that she couldn’t afford to throw away unsold food just because the agreed time had passed.

I listened without arguing. Although her tone offended me, I decided not to turn the situation into a serious confrontation. I reminded myself that everyone has difficult days, and perhaps she was simply under pressure.

Eventually, she packed her things and left.

I thought the matter was over.

I was wrong.

🥩 The Extra Meat That Changed Everything

A few days later, I had been so busy working in my shop that I hadn’t prepared lunch. Since the woman was about to close for the day, I decided to buy some food from her.

“Madam, please give me food,” I said.

She served a small portion into a takeaway pack. When I looked at it, I realized it wouldn’t be enough for me and my son, who would be returning home later.

“Please, can you add a little more? I want to eat from it and keep the remaining food for my son when he comes back. And please add one extra meat for him.”

She looked at me and asked a question I wasn’t expecting.

“Are you paying for the extra meat?”

At first, I thought she was joking. I smiled and replied, “Madam, what is this? You know I am buying food from you. I only asked you to add one extra meat.”

Her expression changed immediately.

“My sister, I sell food to make a living. If I keep giving things away, how will I survive? You people think that because somebody is selling food, they should be giving everybody free food. I have a business to run too.”

For a moment, I couldn’t respond.

I stood there wondering whether this was the same woman who had previously insisted that I shouldn’t pay for the food she voluntarily gave me.

To be clear, I wasn’t asking her to feed my entire family for free. I had come to buy food, and I was asking for an additional piece of meat. If she had simply told me the extra price, I would have paid without any argument.

What hurt me most wasn’t the price of the meat. It was the sudden change in attitude.

I had never demanded free food from her, and I had never assumed that her business existed to satisfy my needs.

I simply felt that we could speak to each other with respect.

Rather than argue, I paid for my food, collected it, and returned to my shop. 😔

🤔 Then I Started Thinking About Everything

As I sat down, I began to reflect on our entire arrangement.

When she needed a place to sell food, she approached me and pleaded for help. I was the one who agreed to accommodate her, even though I had turned down several other people.

I allowed her to keep her business equipment inside my shop because I wanted to make things easier for her.

When she gave me food voluntarily, I appreciated it. I never treated her kindness as an obligation or insisted that she continue giving me free meals.

So why had things become so uncomfortable simply because I reminded her of our agreement and asked about an extra piece of meat?

I understood that she had a business to run. I knew that food cost money and that she needed to make a profit. I never expected her to give away her products every day.

But I also believed that being business partners in the same space—or simply being neighbors—should not mean losing respect for one another.

She had every right to charge me for the food I bought. In the same way, I had every right to expect her to respect the conditions under which I had allowed her to use the space.

Neither of us should have to feel taken advantage of.

🚪 My Shop, My Rules

That evening, I made a decision.

From that point onward, I would pay for whatever food I bought from her. I wouldn’t assume that she would give me anything for free, and I wouldn’t allow past gestures of kindness to create expectations between us.

However, one thing remained unchanged: our original agreement about the space in front of my shop still stood.

If she wanted to continue selling there, she needed to respect the agreed hours.

I also began reconsidering whether allowing her to store her equipment inside my shop had been a mistake. What had started as a simple favor was beginning to make me uncomfortable in my own business premises.

I had offered her space because I believed we could maintain a peaceful and respectful relationship. I never imagined that such a straightforward arrangement would leave me questioning whether I had made the wrong decision.

I didn’t want to create an enemy, but I also didn’t want to sacrifice my peace of mind just to keep someone else comfortable.

Sometimes, helping another person is a good thing. But kindness must come with clear boundaries, mutual understanding, and respect.

💬 What Would You Do in My Position?

If you were in my shoes, how would you handle this situation?

  • Option A: Let her continue selling, but insist that she follows the original agreement and removes her equipment from your shop.
  • Option B: Give her another chance and have a calm conversation to settle the misunderstanding.
  • Option C: End the arrangement completely because you no longer feel comfortable with her attitude.

Remember, she has a right to run her business and charge for her food. But the shop owner also has a right to protect their space and enforce a reasonable agreement.
