Why Do Small, White, Foul-Smelling Stones Appear in the Mouth?
Those tiny white or yellowish, foul-smelling lumps are often tonsil stones (tonsilloliths). They form when material such as food particles, mucus, dead cells, and bacteria becomes trapped in the small folds and crypts of the tonsils. Over time, the material can harden into small stones.
Why Do They Smell So Bad?
Tonsil stones can contain bacteria that produce sulfur-containing compounds. That’s why they may have a particularly unpleasant odor and can contribute to bad breath.
Common Signs
You might notice:
- Small white or yellow spots in the tonsils
- Bad breath
- A strange taste in the mouth
- A feeling that something is stuck in your throat
- Occasional coughing or throat irritation
Some people have tonsil stones without noticing any symptoms at all.
Can You Prevent Them?
Good oral hygiene can help reduce the material that contributes to tonsil stones. Regular brushing, flossing, cleaning the tongue, and rinsing the mouth can be useful. Staying hydrated may also help.
Avoid aggressively digging into the tonsils with sharp objects, as this can cause bleeding or injury.
When Should You See a Doctor?
If the stones keep coming back, become painful, cause significant difficulty swallowing, or are accompanied by persistent throat problems, it’s worth discussing them with a doctor or ENT specialist.
In most cases, tonsil stones aren’t dangerous, but persistent or unusual symptoms shouldn’t simply be assumed to be tonsil stones.
