There is one important thing my bride still doesn’t know about me.

I married a seventy-eight-year-old millionaire for his fortune—but halfway through our wedding vows, he suddenly took the microphone from the officiant.

Everyone in the room smiled, expecting him to say something romantic.

Instead, he looked directly at me and said:

“There is one important thing my bride still doesn’t know about me.”

My smile disappeared.

At twenty-nine, I had never managed to keep a job for more than a few weeks.

“Why should I spend my life trapped behind a desk?” I used to tell my mother. “I’m attractive enough to marry a successful man.”

I knew exactly what I wanted: a comfortable life, expensive clothes, beautiful vacations, and a husband who could give me everything I had never been able to earn for myself.

Then I met Richard.

He was seventy-eight, widowed, incredibly wealthy—and surprisingly interested in me.

People warned me immediately.

“He’s old enough to be your grandfather.”

“He has millions. He probably knows exactly what you’re after.”

“Be careful. Men like that don’t marry young women without a reason.”

I ignored every warning.

Richard proposed after only six months.

And when he placed a diamond ring on my finger, I convinced myself I had finally won the life I wanted.

The wedding was extravagant. Hundreds of guests filled the ballroom, champagne flowed, and photographers captured every moment.

Then came the vows.

Richard held my hands and stared into my eyes.

I was already imagining our life together.

Then he reached for the microphone.

“There is one important thing my bride still doesn’t know about me.”

The ballroom went completely silent.

I laughed nervously.

“Richard…”

He didn’t smile.

Instead, he turned toward the guests and continued.

“And before I marry her, I think everyone deserves to know the truth.”

My heart began pounding.

Because suddenly, I realized something terrifying.

Richard hadn’t chosen me because I was beautiful.

He hadn’t chosen me because he was lonely.

And he certainly hadn’t chosen me because he needed someone to spend his fortune.

He had chosen me because of something that happened twenty-four years earlier.

Something I had completely forgotten.

Then he said one sentence that made the blood drain from my face:

“I know exactly why she agreed to marry me.”

And what he revealed next changed everything I thought I knew about the man standing beside me.
