Episode 40
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
I am the reason why Queen Ngozi is barren, Queen Ijeoma started.
“As you married her, I knew I couldn’t conceive before I married you, but I never told you. So when you married her I was angry and jealous, knowing she might get pregnant. When she does and gives birth I will become useless in the palace.
So I decided to act fast to prevent that.
I started acting like I loved her, so as time went on I convinced her by telling her,” This story is written by Authoress Queen Pen.
“That you know our husband is a king and he can marry as many wives as he wishes, so for us to prevent this from happening—
I know a great witch. Both of us will go there. She will do something for us that will prevent our husband from marrying another wife. He will only love just me and you.
She agreed to follow me there without thinking twice.
I had already made an agreement with the witch woman. I paid her handsomely. ‘Make sure you do something to destroy her womb so that she won’t be able to conceive.’
She agreed to do it. A few days later I went there with Ngozi. The witch welcomed us well and gave us a black water in a calabash to drink, which we both drank.
But there was nothing in mine; she just made it look alike just to convince Ngozi. So we both drank it. That is how Ngozi became childless ever since then, because the witch added something inside the black water that destroyed Ngozi’s womb, but she was unaware until a year later.
So after one year Ngozi was wondering why she couldn’t conceive. She talked to me about it and said she wanted to go and see a debia to know the reason for her problem, but I tried to convince her not to go. She refused, and that is how she found out that I am the cause of her barrenness.
Because as she went to see the debia, he revealed everything to her — the reason for my jealousy and how I colluded with the witch to destroy her womb. The debia showed her everything.
Of course she confronted me and asked me to tell the witch woman to undo it.
I didn’t deny it. I told her that the deed had been done and there was nothing we could do about it. She went to meet the witch woman herself.
The witch told her that before she agreed to help me destroy Ngozi’s womb she already told me that once it was done there was no remedy for it and I agreed.
“So no solution,” the witch told her. As she came back she still confronted me but I only laughed at her. “Ngozi I can’t allow you to give birth when I am barren.” That is how we became enemies till date… Queen Ijeoma confessed.
The crowd shouted, “Wicked woman!”
By now everywhere had filled with people, and the elders and everyone were present listening to the senior queen’s confession because the news about the senior queen confessing in the village square had already spread like a wide fire.
So different people ran out from their huts to witness it.
Queen Ngozi stood there crying and shaking. “I am sorry my king. She convinced me. I never planned to do that. I don’t know what came over me.
And unfortunately everything turned out different. Please forgive me because I love you. I mean no harm,” Queen Ngozi said as she fell to her knees in front of the king, pleading.
“Get out of my front! So both of you want to charm me so that I won’t be able to marry another woman? You want to control me?
Is it a crime to marry both of you?” King Azuka said, pushing Ngozi away.
“Yes, it is a crime,” Queen Ijeoma said laughing, drawing the attention to herself. Queen Ngozi went forward angry; she grabbed Queen Ijeoma’s neck and started strangling her. “You evil queen! I hate the day I called you my co-wife. Look at how you disgrace me in front of everyone.”
“Leave me! Let me confess!” Queen Ijeoma said, struggling to free herself from Ngozi.
“I will kill you with my bare hands!” Queen Ngozi said angrily.
“Let her be,” King Azuka commanded, but Queen Ngozi didn’t release her hold on Ijeoma’s neck; she continued choking Ijeoma.
“Go and drag her from there,” the king said. One of the guards went forward and dragged Queen Ngozi from Queen Ijeoma.
“Leave me! Let me kill her! She doesn’t deserve to live. She dragged me into this mess,” Queen Ngozi said as she struggled with the guard, but he successfully pulled her away. “Let go of me!” Queen Ngozi shouted as she freed herself from the guards.
Queen Ijeoma coughed as she gasped for breath. “I charm the king,” she said smiling.
“Ewooo!” the crowd shouted, surprised.
“You charm me?” King Azuka asked with eyes open wide. The elders murmured among themselves. “We know it, because the king started behaving strange for a while now. That is the reason we stopped coming to the palace,” the elders said.
“Old man, let me confess or I will bite you,” Queen Ijeoma said smiling foolishly. All the attention turned back to her again while some moved backward.
“Yes, I charm the king because I overheard him discussing with the elders about taking another wife. When I asked the king he said yes, that he was going to take another wife.
I became angry knowing that the third wife might give birth and I might not be able to convince her like I convinced Ngozi. So I decided to visit the witch woman again.
I told her that I don’t want the king to take another wife. I want him to love and listen to only me. I don’t want him to think about any other woman aside from me and my co-wife. She agreed to do it for me.
She said it has a consequence, which is the charm will break and I will confess and run mad for twenty market days any day the king’s real blood is born.
She also said on the following day after the last twenty market days I will be normal again, but for me to be completely free the mother of the child will have to be willing to forgive me and I will eat the child poop.
Or I will walk around the village naked for three days. I agreed to do it because I knew the king could never think of marrying another wife since he would be under my control. I never knew someone had already become pregnant for him.
But look at me — I am not mad. The witch is lying,” Queen Ijeoma said smiling as she confessed. She stood up and started dancing. “Arlo, which is an abomination!” the crowd shouted.
“We said it — that the king is under a spell because he changed totally whenever we came to the palace to have a discussion with him. This evil queen always ended up sending us out after insulting us.
My king, you have been behaving differently lately. Anything the queen says is what you will support.”
“We decided to visit Ezemou to know what is wrong, but he said the gods are silent. He repeats the same thing anytime we seek for answers. Since then the Ezemou never said anything concerning your late behavior.”
“Hahaha,” Queen Ijeoma laughed loudly. “I bribed Ezemou because I know you people will definitely visit him for answers to know what is happening to the king, so I bribed him and told him that whenever anyone comes to make enquiry about the king he should tell whoever it is that the gods are silent.”
The crowd shouted again, “Surprise! Abomination! This woman had done a lot.” The elders looked at themselves.
“Please everyone should calm. The king commands.” Everywhere became quiet and calm from the tension.
“Ijeoma, you said the witch said you will get mad any day my real blood is born. Is my real blood born now? How come you are mad?” King Azuka said, trying to understand what is happening.
“It’s you that is mad. The king is mad,” Ijeoma said dancing.
“Can you please speak because there is something I am not getting right? Where is Amaka? Please who saw her? Who knows her whereabouts?” King Azuka asked.
“I sent people to kill her but she escaped,” Queen Ijeoma said jumping.
“Jesus Christ!” the crowd shouted. “Ahh this woman is evil,” the crowd said. “So you were the one that sent people after them that made us not know their whereabouts for months now? We have not set eyes on Amaka ever since then. We don’t know if she is alive or dead,” the villagers said.
“What do you mean you sent someone to kill her? Why? What has she done to you?” King Azuka asked.
“She did everything to me because she said she is pregnant for you. When I went to confirm it I found out that she is truly pregnant for you, like she said.”
“What? You must be joking? You don’t mean — what do you mean Amaka is pregnant for me? I thought I wasn’t capable of fathering a child?” King Azuka said, surprised, not minding the crowd surrounding him.
“My king, do you have anything to do with the maiden in question?” one of the elders asked.
“Yes,” King Azuka replied without hesitating.
“Are you sure? Because I had you deny the pregnancy when she said you were responsible for it…”
“Ahhh I denied what? I never knew Amaka was pregnant. She never told me about it. The truth is that I had something with her and she was still pure when I touched her. I was the person that deflowered her,” the king said without thinking twice.
The elders looked at him surprised. “Then why did you deny it? And what do you mean she never told you?” Okeke the senior elder said.
The crowd murmured to themselves about the tension in the air. “So it was the king that was truly responsible for Amaka’s pregnancy? Oh poor girl. The gods have favoured her,” some of them said.
“You all should shut up. Let me talk!” Queen Ijeoma said as she removed her Ba and started jumping while her brest also jumped along with her.
Some shook their heads in pity while others couldn’t hold back their laughter.
“My king, the queen is disgracing the great royal household. Maybe you should just order some guards to take her home,” one of the elders said. This story is written by Authoress Queen Pen.
“No, she goes nowhere. There is no hidden place for the wicked. She must confess all her evils here so that every evildoer will hear and learn. I don’t care about what people will say, but she must confess here because she is not going back to that palace,” King Azuka said.
Queen Ijeoma laughed out loudly, repeating the same thing the king said over. “I will confess,” she said and started jumping again while her bre*st jumped with her. The villagers erupted in loud laughter.
“I got so angry when I found out that Amaka is pregnant for the king, so I started looking for a way to deal with her and make sure she never gives birth to that child.
I tried several attempts to abort Amaka’s pregnancy.
I told the witch that I wanted to abort Amaka’s pregnancy. I didn’t want her to give birth to that child because I would get mad if she did.
First, the witch woman gave me a substance to add into her food so that she would miscarry after she ate the food.
I couldn’t carry it out myself, so I asked Chioma to help me and I said I would pay her half a million. Luckily she agreed.
“Who is Chioma?” some people asked.
“She is the late Chioma, daughter of Maze Abuka. She is one of our maids,” Queen Ngozi said.
Oh, some people who had heard the rumours before murmured to themselves, “So it was true,” they asked themselves. This story is written by Authoress Queen Pen.
But it didn’t work because Chioma was unable to convince Amaka to eat the food; the substance fell off her hand. So I went ahead to try the second option which was to kill Amaka, Queen Ijeoma continued to confess.
Suddenly the king shouted.
“Mama Amaka! Thank God you are here. Please where is Amaka?” King Azuka said as he saw Mama Ebere coming in the distance and everyone turned in that direction….
