Only One Boy Asked Me to Prom. Everyone Laughed and Said He Must’ve Been Paid. Then the Police Walked Into the Gym.

My classmates made fun of me all the time.

I had a large birthmark on my face. I was born with it, so I had never known what it was like to look in the mirror without it. On top of that, I was raised by a single mother, and money was always tight.

I often wore thrift-store clothes while my classmates showed off their expensive handbags, designer shoes, and new outfits. They would look me up and down, whisper to each other, and laugh.

I learned to pretend it didn’t hurt.

But it did.

As prom got closer, I decided I wasn’t going.

There was no point in walking into a room full of people who had spent years making me feel like I didn’t belong.

Then, one afternoon, something unexpected happened.

A boy named Daniel approached me in the hallway.

“Would you go to prom with me?”

I honestly thought he was joking.

I looked behind me, expecting to see his friends laughing with their phones out.

But he was standing there alone.

“Why?” I asked.

He smiled. “Because I want to go with you.”

By the next morning, everyone knew.

And the rumors started immediately.

“He was probably paid.”

“Maybe her mom offered him money.”

“There’s no way he actually likes her.”

Some even laughed when they saw us together.

I wanted to disappear.

Daniel never did.

He simply told me, “Don’t let people who don’t know you decide what you’re worth.”

Prom night finally arrived.

My mother helped me get ready. My dress wasn’t expensive, but she had carefully altered it herself until it fit perfectly.

When I walked into the gym, I felt every eye turn toward me.

For a moment, I wanted to run.

Then Daniel took my hand.

“Ready?”

I nodded.

We walked onto the dance floor.

People stared.

Some whispered.

Then the music suddenly stopped.

The gym doors opened.

Several police officers walked inside.

Everyone went silent.

One officer approached the principal and handed him an envelope.

The principal’s face changed.

Then he turned toward the crowd.

“We need to speak with everyone about something that happened at this school.”

My heart started racing.

I had no idea why the police were there.

Then the officer looked directly at me.

“Are you [Name]?”

I nodded nervously.

“We need you to come with us.”

The entire gym went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

He squeezed my hand.

And then the officer smiled.

“You’re not in trouble.”

He opened the envelope.

What was inside changed everything I thought I knew about that night.

And suddenly, the classmates who had spent years laughing at me weren’t laughing anymore.
