I Hired an Actor to Pretend to Be My Boyfriend at the Pool Party Where My Ex-Husband Showed Up With His Mistress. He Laughed at Me… Until My Fake Boyfriend Taught Him a Lesson He Never Expected.

I never thought I’d become the kind of woman who hired an actor to pretend to be her boyfriend.

But then again, I never thought my ex-husband would humiliate me the way he did.

My name is Claire, and six months before the pool party, I had been married to Daniel for eleven years.

We had built a comfortable life together.

A beautiful home.

Two dogs.

A circle of friends we shared.

And a marriage I thought was solid.

Until one Thursday evening, Daniel came home and said six words that shattered everything.

“I don’t love you anymore.”

There was no warning.

No counseling.

No attempt to fix things.

Just a suitcase by the door and a confession that he’d been seeing another woman.

Her name was Vanessa.

She was younger, glamorous, and apparently everything I wasn’t.

Daniel moved out within a week.

The divorce was finalized three months later.

I tried to keep my dignity.

I didn’t badmouth him.

I didn’t expose his affair.

I didn’t tell our friends what he’d done.

I simply disappeared from the social circle we’d once shared.

Then came the invitation.

A mutual friend was hosting a huge summer pool party.

I almost ignored it.

But then I saw Daniel’s name on the guest list.

And beside it was Vanessa’s.

Something inside me snapped.

Not because I wanted Daniel back.

I didn’t.

I just couldn’t bear the thought of walking into that party alone while he arrived with his beautiful new girlfriend, looking like he’d won.

So I did something ridiculous.

I hired an actor.

His name was Alex.

He was thirty-five, charming, confident, and completely professional.

When I explained what I wanted, he laughed.

“So you want me to pretend to be your boyfriend for one afternoon?”

“Yes.”

“And that’s it?”

“That’s it.”

He smiled.

“What’s the plan?”

“Make my ex think I’m doing just fine.”

Alex studied me for a moment.

“Are you doing fine?”

I hesitated.

“No.”

He nodded.

“Then let’s make sure you leave that party feeling fine.”

I didn’t understand what he meant at the time.

The day of the party, Alex arrived wearing a simple white shirt and sunglasses.

When we walked through the gate together, people immediately noticed.

Whispers started.

Daniel was standing near the pool with Vanessa.

The second he saw me, his smile disappeared.

Then he looked at Alex.

And laughed.

Actually laughed.

He said something to Vanessa, and she covered her mouth.

Then Daniel walked over.

“Well, well,” he said. “Claire has a boyfriend.”

I smiled.

“Apparently.”

Daniel looked Alex up and down.

“What’s your name?”

“Alex.”

“What do you do?”

Alex smiled.

“I work in private equity.”

Daniel’s expression changed slightly.

“Oh?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You move on quickly.”

I shrugged.

“Life goes on.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Claire, we’re happy for you.”

Her smile was fake enough to crack glass.

I thanked her.

Then Daniel leaned toward me.

“You know, Claire, you don’t have to pretend you’re okay.”

I almost laughed.

Because he had no idea how much I wanted to say.

But before I could respond, Alex gently placed his hand on my shoulder.

“Daniel,” he said calmly, “I think Claire has been through enough.”

Daniel laughed again.

“Are you threatening me?”

“No.”

Alex smiled.

“I’m giving you advice.”

Daniel scoffed.

Then he walked away.

I thought that was the end of it.

It wasn’t.

About an hour later, Daniel started drinking heavily.

He kept glancing at us.

Every time Alex made me laugh, Daniel looked more irritated.

Eventually, he came over again.

“Can I talk to you privately?”

I looked at Alex.

Alex nodded.

I followed Daniel a few steps away.

“You’re really doing this?” Daniel asked.

“Doing what?”

“Showing up with some guy to make me jealous.”

I stared at him.

“Daniel, you left me for another woman. You don’t get to be jealous.”

His face hardened.

“You’re not over me.”

I laughed.

“You wish.”

He grabbed my wrist.

Before I could react, Alex stepped between us.

“Take your hand off her.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Who do you think you are?”

Alex didn’t raise his voice.

“I think you heard me.”

Daniel finally let go.

Then something unexpected happened.

Alex turned to me.

“Claire, I need to tell you something.”

I blinked.

“What?”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“I wasn’t hired to pretend to be your boyfriend.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

Daniel looked confused too.

Alex looked directly at me.

“Your friend didn’t hire me.”

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?”

Alex took a breath.

“I’ve been working with your friend for months. She hired me to help you rebuild your confidence after what happened.”

I stared at him.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Alex continued.

“She told me you were planning to come here alone. She was worried you’d let this man make you feel small again.”

Daniel scoffed.

“This is ridiculous.”

But Alex wasn’t finished.

He turned toward Daniel.

“And there’s something else.”

He opened his phone.

“I’ve seen the messages.”

Daniel went pale.

“What messages?”

“The ones you sent Claire after the divorce.”

I froze.

Alex showed me screenshots.

Daniel had apparently been sending me messages from an anonymous number for months.

Messages saying I was unattractive.

That I’d never find anyone better.

That Vanessa was everything I wasn’t.

I had assumed they were from a stranger.

They weren’t.

They were from Daniel.

He had been trying to destroy my confidence even after the divorce.

And suddenly, the entire pool party went silent.

Because Alex had accidentally revealed the truth.

Daniel’s mistress wasn’t his perfect new love story.

She was standing right there.

And she had just seen the messages too.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“You told me you never contacted her.”

Daniel stammered.

“I didn’t—”

“You lied to me?”

She walked away.

Daniel stood there speechless.

Alex turned to me.

“You don’t need me to pretend anymore.”

Then he smiled.

“Because you just watched your ex lose everything without saying a word.”

I started laughing.

Not because Daniel had been humiliated.

But because, for the first time in months, I realized something.

I hadn’t hired Alex to make Daniel jealous.

I had hired him because I thought I needed another man’s attention to prove that I was still worth something.

I was wrong.

I didn’t need a boyfriend.

Fake or real.

I didn’t need Daniel to regret leaving.

I didn’t need Vanessa to disappear.

I didn’t need anyone’s approval.

I just needed to remember who I was before Daniel convinced me I wasn’t enough.

As I walked out of the party, Alex caught up with me.

“So,” he said, smiling, “do you still need an actor?”

I smiled back.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I think I’m finally ready to play myself.”

And that was the first role I’d ever played that actually felt like me.
