A striking claim made by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sparked renewed discussion online about one of the internet’s most persistent conspiracy theories: so-called “chemtrails.”

What are the white trails behind airplanes?

The long white lines commonly seen behind high-altitude aircraft are known as contrails, short for condensation trails.

They form when hot, moist aircraft exhaust encounters extremely cold air at altitude. Water vapor can condense and freeze into tiny ice crystals, creating a visible trail. Under certain atmospheric conditions, those trails can persist and spread rather than disappearing quickly.
