Wife of Cleveland Police Officer Killed in Horror Crash Shares Heartbreaking Tribute

The wife of Cleveland Police officer PC Matthew Blades has shared a deeply emotional tribute after her husband was killed in a horrific crash that claimed seven lives.

Blades, 37, and fellow officer PC Tom Clough, 38, died in the early hours of August 22 when a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way on the A66 collided head-on with their marked police vehicle. All five occupants of the other vehicle also died.

In a statement released by Cleveland Police, Blades’ wife described him as her beloved husband, best friend, and the devoted father of their two young boys.

She said that no words could adequately honor her husband and described him as someone who was loved deeply by his family and friends. She also said their children would grow up knowing what an incredible father he was.

Her tribute ended with a heartbreaking message of remembrance, describing him as “Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our superhero.”

A Devastating Loss

The crash occurred at around 3:39 a.m. on the A66. Police had been searching for the Volkswagen after reports of incidents involving the vehicle, which was reportedly using cloned registration plates. The pursuit was stopped shortly before the collision, and an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct is underway.

The tragedy has left Cleveland Police and the wider community grieving two officers who were remembered for their dedication to protecting others.

Blades was also known outside policing as a youth football coach, making his death an especially painful loss for the families and young people he supported.
