Hungarian pancakes

Posted on May 20, 2026

Hungarian pancakes, also known as Palacsinta, are thin, soft, and delicate pancakes popular in Hungary cuisine. They are similar to French crepes but are slightly heartier and commonly filled with sweet fillings like jam, chocolate, sweet cheese, or Nutella. These pancakes are perfect for breakfast, dessert, or an afternoon treat.

Prep Time

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Servings: 8 pancakes

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Non-stick skillet or crepe pan
  • Spatula
  • Ladle or measuring cup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1½ cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter or oil for cooking

Optional Fillings

  • Apricot jam
  • Nutella
  • Sweetened cream cheese
  • Fresh berries
  • Powdered sugar

Ingredient Notes

  • Milk: Whole milk gives the best soft texture.
  • Butter: Adds richness and prevents dryness.
  • Vanilla: Enhances the sweet flavor.
  • Flour: Regular all-purpose flour works perfectly.
  • Fillings: Traditional Hungarian pancakes often use fruit jams or cocoa powder with sugar.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Batter

In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, melted butter, and salt. Gradually add flour and whisk until smooth and lump-free.

Step 2: Rest the Batter

Let the batter rest for 10 minutes. This helps create softer pancakes.

Step 3: Heat the Pan

Lightly grease a non-stick skillet with butter or oil and heat over medium heat.

Step 4: Cook the Pancakes

Pour a small ladle of batter into the pan and swirl to coat evenly.

Cook for about 1–2 minutes until the edges lift slightly, then flip and cook the other side for 30–40 seconds.

Step 5: Add Fillings

Spread your desired filling over each pancake and roll or fold them.

Step 6: Serve

Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm.
