What the Hell Is This?! I Found It in My Girlfriend’s Bathroom

I genuinely didn’t know what I was looking at when I first noticed it.

I was in my girlfriend’s bathroom when something strange caught my eye in the corner, right where the wall meets the tiles.

At first glance, I honestly thought it might be a dead animal or some kind of tiny creature.

But when I looked closer, it seemed even stranger.

There was this fleshy-looking growth tucked tightly against the wall. Its unusual shape made it look almost like something from a science-fiction movie.

Naturally, my first thought was:

What the hell is that?!

Is It Mold or Fungus?

The first possibility that came to mind was mold or some type of fungus.

Bathrooms provide almost perfect conditions for fungal growth. They’re frequently warm and humid, and moisture can collect around grout, corners, pipes, and poorly ventilated areas.

Some fungi can develop into surprisingly unusual shapes, especially when they’ve been growing undisturbed for a while.

But this didn’t look like the ordinary fuzzy black, green, or white mold I’d seen before.

That’s what made it so unsettling.

Could It Be Something Else?

There are several things that can produce strange-looking growths in damp areas.

It could potentially be a type of fungal growth, slime mold, or another moisture-loving organism. In some cases, expanding materials, deteriorating caulk, or debris trapped behind tiles can also create shapes that look surprisingly biological.

And, of course, there’s always the possibility that what looks like a strange organism is simply something completely ordinary that happens to have grown or accumulated in an unusual way.

Without seeing it in person—or having a clear photograph—it’s impossible to confidently identify it.

The Bathroom Environment Is the Biggest Clue

The location is important.

A bathroom corner next to tile is exactly the kind of place where moisture can remain trapped. If there’s a slow leak, poor ventilation, damaged grout, or water getting behind the wall, it can create an environment where unwanted growth thrives.

So rather than immediately assuming it’s some bizarre creature, I’d start by checking for:

• Persistent dampness
• Leaking pipes or fixtures
• Damaged grout
• Loose or deteriorating caulk
• Musty smells
• Discoloration around the surrounding tiles
• Signs of moisture behind or underneath the surface

If the growth is attached to the wall or appears to be spreading, it’s worth documenting it with photographs and having the property owner or a qualified professional inspect the area.

Has Anyone Seen Anything Like This?

That’s the part I’m still wondering about.

I’ve seen plenty of strange things in bathrooms, but this was definitely one of the more unusual discoveries.

It looked almost too strange to be ordinary mold, yet the damp bathroom environment makes fungal or other biological growth a reasonable possibility.
